All Saints Infants Wildlife Garden Project

Little Green Space is currently involved in the creation of a wildlife garden at All Saints Infants' School in Matlock.

Before  Hard at work

We made a project proposal to the school and the plans were agreed in June 2008. The garden has been planned to incorporate butterfly gardens, a wild meadow area, insect habitats, a natural seating area and planting schemes that will encourage wildlife.

Work has been carried out during March 2009 with staff and parents, and the garden is now nearing completion.

Raised beds have been created along one side of the garden, where a range of nectar-rich plants have been planted. Three fruit trees - a pear, a plum and an apple -  were also planted. Trees and plants were donated by Little Green Space.

Planting the fruit trees

Overgrown shrubbery areas have been cleared and will provide planting areas for fruit and vegetables. A  labyrinth area has been created formed with tiles designed and made by the children.

The garden will enhance the outdoor learning curriculum for children at the school, offering opportunities for investigating and observing birds and mini-beasts in their natural habitats. This will also support the National Curriculum in Science for children in years 1 and 2, and Knowledge and Understanding of the World at Foundation Stage.

Little Green Space has been supporting the creation of this garden with practical work and advice as well as funding through a Greenwatch grant from Derbyshire County Council. The school's Parents and Friends Association have also been fundraising towards this project during 2008-2009. To support us in this work click here.
