Running

In less than three weeks I'll be running in Bakewell's Race For Life event to raise money for Cancer Research. I'm now trying to run at least a mile every day. This is hard because I live in the Peak District - I have decided that I really hate running, and I really, really hate running uphill!

You can sponsor me on www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/pennybunting A big thank you to everyone who has sponsored me so far - your generosity is keeping me going up those hills!

Matlock Springs (again)

Transition Matlock's Matlock Springs event was a huge success. There was a great atmosphere in the Imperial Rooms with lots of people coming in to find out about sustainable living.

Rowena and I were selling reusable shopping bags that a group of us had made at a sewing party a couple of weeks ago. We used fabric we had lying around - offcuts of curtain material and the like - and some of the bags were pretty stylish! We managed to sell all the bags we had made.

We'll be getting together again soon to make more bags - in fact we are planning to have a guerilla bagging event in town sometime in the summer. We'll be heading into shops to offer fabric bags instead of plastic carrier bags - so look out for us and you may get a free bag!

If you get the bagging bug, you can make your own - visit the morsbags website for a pattern.

Matlock Springs

If you are in Matlock tomorrow be sure to drop into the Imperial Rooms, where Transition Matlock will be hosting the Matlock Springs event from 10am - 3pm.

There will be lots going on, with loads of stalls with information on a range of topics including growing your own food, reducing your energy costs, beekeeping and recycling. There will be homemade cakes and activities for kids, too - and most of the activities are free of charge.

Race for Life

I will be running in the Cancer Research Peak District Race for Life on 17 May. It is a 3 mile (5k) run which is a very, very long way. (I am not a natural runner!)

Please sponsor me on www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/pennybunting

Potatoes

I have been outside frantically earthing up all the potatoes. There is a frost predicted for tonight, and the foliage of the Rocket spuds I started off under the cloche is now really high, so I don't want to risk losing them. If this fine weather continues, we could be harvesting our first new potatoes by the end of next month!

Nurdles

Have you heard of nurdles? Neither had I until last week. Nurdles are tiny beads of plastic, the raw material used in plastic manufacturing. Hundreds of billions of pounds of nurdles are shipped all around the world each year, and inevitably a large amount end up escaping and finding their way into the sea and onto beaches. In fact Greenpeace have estimated that at least 10% of worldwide beach rubbish comes in the form of nurdles.

All beach litter is a potential threat to marine wildlife, but nurdles are particularly dangerous as they look like fish eggs, an important element in the diet of many sea birds. Nurdles are full of toxins, and when birds feed them to their young,  the babies die.

We encountered nurdles for the first time down at Kimmeridge in Dorset last week. The Dorset Wildlife Trust are trying to collect a million from the beach at Kimmeridge, to raise awareness of the issue. They already have 200.000 in a jar on the counter at the Fine Foundation Marine Centre. Even if you live nowhere near the sea, you can help by reducing your use of plastics as much as possible, and recycling as much plastic waste as you can.
