AWARD FOR MATLOCK’S LITTLE GREEN SPACE

Matlock-based Little Green Space has been awarded the 2010 Celebrating People Award by the Derbyshire Dales Council for Voluntary Service (CVS).

Patricia Leake, Derbyshire Dales CVS trustee, presented Penny Bunting of Little Green Space with the award at the CVS’s annual general meeting on 14th October 2010 , at Darley Dale Methodist Hall.

Thanking the CVS for the award, Penny Bunting said: “Celebrating People is particularly appropriate, because living sustainably and creating habitats for wildlife has huge benefits for people. These connections are really worth celebrating.

“At local schools, for example, pupils love wildlife areas, mini-orchards and vegetable gardens, which help them to interact with nature and to learn skills such as growing food. Children at Matlock Bath Holy Trinity School recently made short films about the butterfly and bee garden we planted there, saying it was ‘awesome’.”

She added that studies show that the more access people have to green spaces, the greater their physical and mental health.

The annual Celebrating People Award is made in memory of Jim Heslop, first Chair of Derbyshire Dales CVS, which supports local voluntary and community groups.

Through its own work and by inspiring others, Little Green Space is creating a network of rich and healthy spaces for people and wildlife. For more details, see www.littlegreenspace.org.uk or write to PO Box 7590 , Matlock DE4 9BT .
