December 2009 December 12, 2009 Candles for Copenhagen
We joined a candlelit vigil together with Transition Matlock, Greenpeace, MACAF (Matlock Area Climate Action Forum) in Matlock. This was part of a global action calling on governments at the Copenhagen climate summit to deliver a real deal on climate change. December 9, 2009 BBC Radio Derby This morning Rich appeared on BBC Radio Derby's Shane O'Connor breakfast programme for a feature on how to have a green Christmas. He talked about win-win solutions, such as choosing low energy LED lights for your Christmas tree (which we have just done, and very pretty they look, too). He also talked about shopping locally for your Christmas food and buying environmentally-friendly Christmas gifts such as the dedicated tree planting scheme run by Trees for Life. December 7, 2009 BBC East Midlands Today The photo below of our Tree O'Clock event appeared on BBC East Midlands Today evening television news as part of a summary of the tree planting that took place in our region. December 5, 2009 Tree O'Clock A group of 10 people gathered at Hackney Leys this morning at 11 o'clock, to join in the nationwide Tree O' Clock event. We managed to plant 59 trees - mostly ash and oak - during the hour, and have logged our achievements with BBC Breathing Spaces, the event organisers, in the hope of being part of a record-breaking attempt to plant the most trees ever in a single hour. I'll let you know whether or not we succeeded as soon as we find out! Even if we haven't broken a world record, it was a great morning - and 59 trees were planted, which is always a good thing! December 1, 2009 Green Father Christmas and Shopping Locally Now that it's December, our annual Save the North Pole Christmas campaign is up and running again. Today we rushed around our local town of Matlock to do our Christmas shopping. The reason for the rush was that the Matlock Mercury newspaper was coming round to photograph our green Father Christmas for a feature on how to have a green Christmas. We wanted to illustrate the fact that it is possible to do your Christmas shopping in your local town, which cuts down food and present miles and also helps support your local community. You can see the Mercury's feature here.
