Little Green Space |

February 2010 February 21, 2010 Sowing Despite the persistent cold and snowy weather I have decided to get things going in the veg patch. I've cleared off the bedroom windowsill to make space for five seed trays, and have sown peppers (chilli and bell), aubergines, tomatoes (5 varieties), leeks, and some salad leaves. Oh and some sweet peas - I've decided to have a go at a few more flowery things this year, in the hope of attracting as many beneficial critters to the plot as possible. Now that I have a greenhouse (yay!) I can experiment with a few early sowings under cover. So I've put in some spring onions and radishes. And I should be able to move plants off the window sill into the greenhouse as they grow. Finally I've put some chitted first earlies - Duke of York - into a pot in the greenhouse. This is super-early for spuds, but as I went as bit mad (again!) with the seed potato order, I figure it won't hurt to risk three of the 110 tubers I've bought. In case your interested, the potato varieties I've bought, as well as the Dukes, are: Swift, Vivaldi, Charlotte, Cara and Lady Balfour. Plus, of course, my trusted second earlies, Kestrel, and maincrops Sarpo Mira, which always seem to do so well in my soil. February 1, 2010 Big Garden Bird Watch Once again we participated in the RSPB's Big Garden Bird Watch, spending an hour on Saturday recording all the birds to visit our garden. Our bird-watching experience was a bit diappointing, really, given the quantity and variety of birds we have had visiting the garden in the past few weeks - including bullfinches, a nuthatch, yellowhammers and even a snipe. None of these appeared, of course, during our allotted hour of bird-spotting. We did record nine different species of birds, though, and submitted our results this morning. Since then, the bullfinches and yellowhammers have made a reappearance - maybe next year we'll choose a better hour! |
