Snow!

It is now 23 days since the snow first arrived back in December 2009, and this morning I'm still looking out on a world of white - and more snow, which has been falling steadily since yesterday afternoon.

The chickens have been faring well so far, despite the freezing temperatures - last week it went down to minus 10 in these parts. We have had to keep a wary eye out for Mr Fox, though. We've spotted him skulking around in the top field at least four times in the past fortnight. Rich - somewhat entertainingly - had to chase him away on Christmas morning, and he seemed decidedly unbothered (the fox, not Rich, who was bothered) At least the fox is easy to spot in the snow.

Also easy to spot at the moment are the birds visiting our garden. As well as the usual suspects we have seen redwings, yellowhammers and a nuthatch in the garden, as well as a buzzard, a common snipe and a pair of lapwings in the fields. There seems to be a constant flurry of activity in the garden trees and bushes, with birds patiently waiting their turn for a peck at the various feeders we have dotted around.

Not so easy to spot are my parsnips, which have lain buried under a foot of snow for over a week. Yesterday I decided enough was enough - we were having a roast dinner - and went out with a kettle of hot water to pour over the veggie patch. I eventually located the sodden leaves of a couple of parsnips, and with the help of another hot kettle, managed to prize the frozen roots free from the frozen soil. And boy, did they taste good!
