LITTLE
GREEN SPACE LAUNCHED IN DERBYSHIRE
Little Green
Space, a new non-profit project working to create a network of
environmentally and wildlife friendly spaces, is being launched this week.
The
organization, based in Matlock in Derbyshire, aims to create rich and
healthy habitats that are good for people, wildlife and the environment,
alongside carrying environmental awareness and education work.
“We will be working with schools, businesses
and local people to transform patches of land which are currently doing
little for the environment into fantastic habitats for wildlife”, said
Little Green Space Director Richard Bunting.
“Loss of habitats is bad news for the planet.
Over the past 50 years the UK has lost some 95 per cent of its wildflower
meadows and 50 per cent of lowland woods. This environmental damage is now
being accompanied by serious changes to the atmosphere. We can all take
steps to protect habitats and ecosystems, and to address the unprecedented
global threat of climate change.”
Little Green Space is currently working at
Hackney Leys, a smallholding covering five acres of grassland just outside
Matlock.
Using traditional and organic methods, much of
the land at Hackney Leys will be maintained as hay meadow, allowing
wildflowers to flourish. Native broadleaved trees, which provide food and
shelter for many creatures and also absorb carbon dioxide, will be
planted. Wild hedgerow will be managed around the fields and dry stone
walls rebuilt.

the project's work, call Richard Bunting on 07753 488146, visit www.littlegreenspace.org.uk
