October 2009 October 31, 2009 Happy Halloween!
I'm so chuffed with our home-grown pumpkins! October 23, 2009 10:10 I know it's a bit early to be thinking about New Year's resolutions, but if you visit www.1010uk.org, you may be inspired. The folks at 10:10 are trying to encourage as many people as possible to reduce their carbon emissions by 10% by December 2010, and have lots of ideas to help you do just that. Nearly 40,000 people have signed up already. Why not join them? October 13, 2009 First Frost
We woke up to the first frost of the autumn this morning. Luckily I did a final harvest of all the beans, courgettes and squash a couple of days ago, and our amazing selection of pumpkins, plus a giant marrow, are safely stored in the greenhouse. (They were in the shed, but a mouse had had a bit of a nibble, so they'll hopefully be safer in the greenhouse.) Despite the cold weather, the courgettes are still going, producing flowers, which are still forming into little fruits. I wonder how much longer they'll keep going? October 4, 2009 Eco Day
We had a busy day today at All Saints Junior School in Matlock, running a Little Green Space stall at their Eco Day. We organised a butterfly identification quiz for the kids, with prizes of a bird nesting box and bird feeder, which were kindly donated by Johnson-Ladygrove Mills of Two Dales. My colleague Amanda rescues owls, and she came along with two of her owls and a couple of hawks - the kids were able to hold a bird, and ask Amanda questions - she knows just about everything there is to know about owls! There were loads of other activities going on in the school grounds, including the construction of an insect hotel and bird box building. It was a good day, and will hopefully take place again next year. October 2, 2009 Matlock in Bloom The garden at All Saints Infants, where Little Green Space have been involved with creating a wildlife-friendly and habitat-rich learning environment for the children, has won third prize in the school's category in the Matlock in Bloom awards.
