Wessington Primary School

Little Green Space Directors Penny and Richard Bunting visited Wessington Primary School on 9 June 2008 to meet with Head Teacher Vicki Cousins. They gave advice on enhancing the already excellent wildlife areas at the school.

On 4 July 2008 Penny Bunting visited the school to lead a session on Magnificent Mini-beasts with a class of Year 4, 5 and 6 children. The children played a game of Bug Bingo, identifying photographs of invertebrates on the interactive whiteboard, before going out into Wessington Nature Reserve for a bug hunt.

The children used a sweep net to find and identify species, as well as searching for varieties of wildflowers that grow on the reserve. They took digital video cameras with them, to make short films of their finds.

Back in the classroom the children edited their films, adding titles to identify the species they had found. The session ended with a class viewing of all the films and a mini-beast quiz.

During December 2008 Little Green Space returned to Wessington to plant native broadleaved trees on the nature reserve. Each Reception child was allocated tree which they helped to plant and will  look after during the seven years they spend at the school.

A selection of ash, rowan, beech and wild cherry trees were planted. The trees were funded as part of a Greenwatch grant from Derbyshire County Council.
