LITTLE GREEN SPACE LAUNCHES SCHOOLS PROGRAMME WITH MAGNIFICENT MINI-BEASTS

Little Green Space, a Matlock-based environmental project working to create a network of green spaces, launched its new educational programme with a visit to Wessington Primary School in Derbyshire on Friday 4 July 2008.

The group’s Director Penny Bunting visited the school to run a session on ‘Magnificent Mini-beasts’ with a group of the school’s children aged between 8 and 11 years old.

Sixteen children took part in a quiz identifying a range of invertebrates, and visited neighbouring Wessington Nature Reserve to spot creatures for themselves and make short films about their discoveries.

“We had a very enjoyable morning and the children were keen to learn about mini-beasts and their habitats,” said Penny Bunting, Director of Little Green Space.

“The children at Wessington Primary School are lucky to have a fantastic nature reserve on their doorstep, as well as wonderful school grounds packed with wildlife-friendly features that are great for outdoor learning and encouraging an interest in nature.”

The event was organised as part of the school’s Enhancement Week, during which the children were learning about health and well-being.

Little Green Space works with schools, businesses and local people to create rich and healthy habitats that benefit people, wildlife and the environment, and carries out environmental awareness and education work.

It aims to show that everyone can take steps to protect our environment and to tackle climate change and habitat loss.
