It's estimated that around 1.7 billion items of plastic packaging are thrown away in the UK every week. Many toiletries – shampoo, body wash and liquid hand wash for example – come in single-use bottles, contributing to this plastic pile-up.

But when it comes to liquid products like this, there's almost always a sustainable alternative.

One great example of this is The Green Co's GreenTabs Foaming Hand Soap. The starter kit contains an attractive, sturdy glass bottle, and a tablet that magically converts to a rich, cleansing foam when you add water.

It's easy to use: simple fill the bottle with warm water, add the tablet, and wait for a few minutes for the tablet to dissolve.  

There are four different scents available, all naturally fragranced with pure essential oils. Choose from coconut and sandalwood, lavender and vanilla, citrus and mint, or rosemary and eucalyptus. We particularly loved the light, refreshing fragrance of citrus and mint – ideal to keep next to the kitchen sink for a quick clean-up before preparing food.

GreenTabs foaming hand soap is lovely to use. The foam feels luxurious – and is particularly fun for children, who may otherwise be reluctant hand-washers! The gentle formula cleanses hands effectively – it kills 99.9% of bacteria – without drying out the skin.

Each pump of foam uses just 0.8ml of liquid, so a bottle of GreenTabs hand soap lasts at least twice as long as regular liquid hand wash. So, not only does this soap drastically reduce waste, it also saves money.

The bottle is designed to last a lifetime, completely eliminating the need for any single-use plastic. It has a removable, non-slip base to keep it safe on bathroom or kitchen surfaces. This base is available in four different colours – blue, olive, taupe or black – to complement existing home décor.

When you need to refill your bottle, you can buy a refill pack of four tablets – this is available in your preferred fragrance, or choose a pack with all four scents if you want to try them all.

The green credentials of this foaming soap are clear. Switching from single-use plastic bottles to GreenTabs refillable hand soap can save a household up to 1kg of plastic waste each year. The packaging that the starter kit is sent in is also eco-friendly – it's plastic free, and made from recyclable cardboard.
