Hiltwood's range of eco-friendly soaps has been designed with men in mind. With four fresh, invigorating fragrances available, these bars cleanse, exfoliate and moisturise – without the addition of nasty chemicals or palm oil.
Many mass-produced soap bars and shower gels contain palm oil – and this has become of increasing concern to anyone wanting to buy ethical, sustainable products.
Palm oil production is one of the leading causes of deforestation worldwide – and threatens endangered species such as orangutans, elephants, rhinos and tigers.
Orangutans are particularly at risk. More than 85% of the world's palm oil is produced in Indonesia and Malaysia – and these countries contain the orangutan's only remaining habitat. Fewer than 80,000 orangutans survive today, and their home is constantly under threat of destruction through deforestation.
Alongside habitat destruction, palm oil production is also linked to unethical practices such as poor working conditions – including enforced long hours, child labour, and exposure to toxic chemicals. And this is true even when some big brands claim to use 'sustainable' palm oil.
So choosing products that are free from palm oil – such as Hiltwood soaps – is an important step when seeking to live a more ethical and sustainable lifestyle.
We tried all four bars of soap in Hiltwood's range. The first thing we noticed was the wonderful fragrance as we opened the box. We were also impressed with the eco-friendly packaging – this is a plastic-free product, with the soaps wrapped in attractive paper sleeves, and presented in a recyclable box.
Hiltwood soaps are handcrafted in the UK, using energy-conscious production. They contain no SLS or parabens, and are vegan.
Here's what we thought of each bar.
Cedarwood and Spanish Verbena with Turmeric Natural Soap Bar
This refreshing turmeric soap bar has anti-inflammatory properties that can help calm irritation and reduce spots and redness. It's a gently exfoliating, deeply cleansing soap that can be used on hands, face and body, and leaves skin soft and smooth. The lovely scent is revitalising – a great pick-me-up for early mornings.
Lime and Charcoal Natural Soap Bar
With deep-cleansing, activated charcoal, this refreshing, citrussy bar holds its shape and lasts for ages. Designed to naturally draw out impurities, it's a good choice for anyone with oily or problem skin – and leaves skin clean and smooth. Because of the natural ingredients, it's deeply-cleansing but not harsh. Unlike many commercial products that contain palm oil derivatives such as sulfates, that can strip the skin of its natural moisture, this lime and charcoal bar doesn't dry skin out.
Eucalyptus, Lemon, Mint and Olive Stone Natural Soap Bar
A blend of freshly scented ingredients gives this bar a fantastic uplifting fragrance. The addition of mint and eucalyptus creates a cooling sensation that's soothing for inflamed or irritated skin. The soap bar contains grit in the form of ground olive stones – an effective natural exfoliator that removes dead skin cells to leave the face feeling smooth and fresh. It's also great for removing grime from hardworking hands after gardening or other mucky jobs.
Tea Tree, Lavender, Dead Sea Mud and Pumice Natural Soap Bar
This luxurious bar lathers up nicely, with the pumice creating an exfoliating gritty texture to deep-clean skin. Lavender and tea tree are calming scents – and the healing tea tree helps to soothe skin irritation. Like all Hiltwood bars, this contains moisturising, plant-based oils and butters to cleanse without causing dryness or irritation, leaving skin soft and nourished.
